How Long Does Boniva Take To Get Out Of The System?

Hi. My Dr. prescribed Boniva for my osteoporosis. I am in good health and have not taken any medications for anything for quite some time. I took the once monthly 150mg. on June 1st. I had a very bad reaction the next day. Body aches, headache, vomiting, etc. I have had gastrointestinal distress and headaches since. How long does this medication take to get out of the body? Thanks.

Hi,

It may take 8-33 days for total clearance of Boniva from the body. Half-life (t½) for 150 mg tablet Boniva is approximately 37-157 hours. Half-life (t½) is the time required to reduce the concentration of a drug by 50%. It takes about 5 half-lives for a drug like Boniva to be roughly 97% eliminated. (50%, then 75% then 87.5% then 93.75% then 96.875%). So accordingly it may take 185 to 800 hours (8 to 33 days) to get Boniva cleared from the body system.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
