How Long Does Levothyroxine Stay In The System?

My mother is 92 and is on is on the following medications. 40 g omeprazole daily, .050 levothyroxine daily and 25 mg metoprolol daily. She was getting hot flashes so six weeks ago the doctor took her off the levothyroxine to see if there would be any change. For a while her hot flashes were not as frequent but she still has them. Do you have any idea what might be causing these hot flashes? How long does it take to get the levothyroxine out of her body?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my clinical experience, the elimination half life of levothyroxine is 7 days and so there would be very negligible amount of drug in the system after 6 weeks.
* The hot flushes over the body is related to underlying hormone imbalance, which has to be evaluated thoroughly via lab tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
