How Long Does Methamphetamine Stay In The Body During Pregnancy?
I have a friend who 31 weeks pregnant and using meth. Out of curiosity about how long does it take for meth to get out of the placenta? What are the chances of her baby being positive for meth at birth? Will she have a chance to keep the baby if she was to stop using today and stay clean until the baby is born?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Methamphetamine is a dangerous substance that can harm a woman’s body and put her at risk for maternal complications. For example, women who abuse Methamphetamine tend to have a significantly lower body mass index (BMI). This can make her pregnancy riskier. One study found that lower BMI increased a woman’s chance for pregnancy complications, including more frequent hospitalizations and longer hospital stays. The anorectic effects of Methamphetamine can also result in intrauterine growth retardation (poor growth of the fetus in the womb).
Using Methamphetamine during pregnancy can also reduce a woman’s placental blood flow. This can cause fetal hypoxia, an insufficient amount of oxygen to the fetus. Also can cause increased mortality in the mother and her child.
Retinal defects.
Cleft palate.
Malformations of the ribs.
Slowed physical growth.
Delayed motor development.
Stop it immediately.
Take care.
