Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am taking Metoprolol succ er 25 mg daily. I have been on it for 2 weeks. I started taking it because of arrhythmias. It seems my arrhythmias are worse now. My cardiologist told me to stop taking it. Is it safe for me to stop taking it without weaning off it? Also, how long will this med stay in my system and cause side effects?
You shouldn't stop taking Metoprolol abruptly! Because sharp chest pain, irregular heartbeat and sometimes heart attack may occur if you do that.
Taper off rule is by reducing half the dose each week: 25mg->12.5mg->6.25mg->stop). I strongly recommend you to limit physical activity while you are lowering your dose!!!
Elimination half-life of metoprolol is 3 to 4 hours.
If new or worsened chest pain or other heart problems occur, see your doctor right away. You may need to start taking metoprolol tablets again.
Hope you find this helpful!
