How Long Does Metoprolol Stay In The System?

I don t understand the half life of a drug. MY husband has been on metoprolol succinate er for about 5 months taking 25mg 2x s a day. He is now being weaned off the drug. 1 pill a day for a week then half a pill for another week. How long will it take for this medicine to leave his system completely?

I understand your concern.
Metoprolol is absorbed over a large part of the intestine.
It is extensively metabolised and only about 5% of an oral dose and 10% of an intravenous dose is excreted in unchanged form via the kidneys.
The mean elimination half-life of metoprolol is 3 to 4 hours.
