Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I don t understand the half life of a drug. MY husband has been on metoprolol succinate er for about 5 months taking 25mg 2x s a day. He is now being weaned off the drug. 1 pill a day for a week then half a pill for another week. How long will it take for this medicine to leave his system completely?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Metoprolol is absorbed over a large part of the intestine. It is extensively metabolised and only about 5% of an oral dose and 10% of an intravenous dose is excreted in unchanged form via the kidneys. The mean elimination half-life of metoprolol is 3 to 4 hours. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S., MBBS., MD.
