How Long Does Premarin Cream Take To Cure Vaginal Dryness?

I am post menopausal and have been unable to have intercourse for about ten years - the pain is excrusicating, and quite frankly, things don t even get off the ground, so to speak. Within seconds of attempted penetration it s all over. My doctor has given me Premarin vaginal cream. How long does it normally take before the cream helps the vagina to build new tissue?

Hello,

This is a common problem and can be addressed. Yes, it is appropriate to use vaginal estrogen cream as a first line. The skin of the vagina is very sensitive to estrogen and in menopause the vaginal skin becomes more 'thinned out' and fragile.

Once you have been on the estrogen cream for a couple of months, your doctor should introduce you to vaginal dilators. These can be used to stretch the vaginal skin that has become more atrophic leading to narrowing of the vagina.
