How Long Does Tetanus Injection Stay Active In Human Body?

hello, my husband, 31 yrs of age, had his booster for anti rabies last june 2011, i understand that he also received a vaccine for anti tetanus. He had a wound that came from a burning welding rod, now my question is, does he need another shot of tetanus toxoid, or is it still good?

Hello,

The Tetanus toxoid injection gives protection against the tetanus development for a period of 10 years from the date of shot via its antibodies circulating in the serum. So if your husband had Tetanus shot within time span of last 10 years, he does not require additional shot, but if beyond that period, he must have the same.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
