My husband took Valtrex ..for what the doctor thought was shingles. He is on warfarin for a mechanical heart valve...now he has had 2 hematoma in the last 2 weeks. Today is in the hospital with a 10 cm x 3 cm hematoma. Medicine was taken 2 weeks ago..how long does it stay in the body and can it cause hematoma?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is unlikely the current hematoma is the side effect of Valtrex.
Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is an antiviral medicine used to treat shingles and some other herpes virus infections. It's half life is about 3 hours. It will take about 6-7 hours for Valtrex to clear from the bloodstream. Valtrex may cause rarely a coagulation problems but if your husband took Valtrex 2 weeks before, then it is highly unlikely that the current hematoma is caused by Valtrex. Hematoma may be a side effect of Warfarin. Therefore it is advised patients taking Warfarin to be monitored every 4 weeks by checking International Normalized Ratio (INR). Any change in the INR or any side effects (e.g. hematoma) requires careful inspection whether patient is taking prescription, OTC drugs, any herbal or natural remedies.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
