Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests that were 'positive'. I also had blood drawn, but will not get the results until monday. I have been on warfarin since November as a result of a DVT, and may be pregnant. How long will it take for this drug to leave my system? My obgyn has perscibed Lovinox shots as a safe alternative, but how will I know if the warfarin has hurt my baby?
Also, is it possible to get a 'false positive'? It was an EPT 'word' test.
For sure warfarin is contraindicated in pregnancy and lovenox is usually taken as a safe alternative during pregnancy. It takes about 3 to 5 days for warfarin to get cleared off from the system to a greater extend.
It is difficult to say if the warfarin has affected the baby or not at moment.
During your follow up, repeated ultrasounds would be helpful to determine if there is a malformation. But there is risk of central nervous system damage which will manifest as seizures and weakness of limbness when the child is born. but the nervous damage occurs when the warfarin is taken most with advanced pregnancy which i think is not your case.
Best regards Dr Achuo
