How Long Does An SSRI Take To Get Out Of The System?

Hi! I recently back on lexapro for my anxiety. A week after I started taking it, I had racing thoughts, depression, depersonalization, increased anxiety. This really worried me so I got off the medication. Is this common and should I be concerned? How long will it take for the ssri to get out of my system?

Hello,

It can take up to a week for Lexapro to completely clear out of your system. However, it is not advisable to quit Lexapro abruptly. Rather taper down the dose before discontinuation to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Please follow up with your doctor to discuss if discontinuing Lexapro is right for you.

I would also like to add that once you continue taking Lexapro for at least a month, your system will get used to the medication and many of the side effects will fade away.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi
