Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Long Does An Anti Rabies Vaccination Stays Effective?
I had a dog bite 20 months ago and had completed the 5 shots. I was again bitten by the same dog, our pet dog about 3 days ago. Our dog is completely vaccinated with anti rabbies. I went to a dog bite center and I was told that i just need a 2 shots booster since i already had my vaccination before. For my peace of mind, i just want to know how many years is the effectivity of the anti rabbies vaccination i had less than 2 years ago. Thank you doctor .
I understand your concern and will try my best to help you. The effectiveness of the antirabies vaccine depends on the type of vaccine you were administered. If you had received cell culture vaccine, then just 2 booster doses would be sufficient (on days 0 and 3). However, if you do not have the record about the type of vaccine, I would recommend checking for antibody titer, as it would give you a definite answer regarding your immunity level.
If your antibody levels are not adequate then you should receive the full course of vaccination along with immunoglobulin.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
