how long does cancer take to spread without chemo? My aunt was diagnosed w/cervical cancer recently and has shared this info with the family but she refuses to have chemo or radiation. She hasn't told anyone what stage it's in but the family is assuming it's in a stage inwhich she feels she may not have very long because she's asking all of her children to move in with her in this time. Just curious to know. Tx
Frankly, in cervical cancer, no-one can predict the exact time after which the cancer would spread to different parts of the body. As an approximate index, one would require the stage of cervical cancer.
Having said that, unlike other cancer, cervical cancer is curable even upto Stage IVA and Radiation & Chemotherapy which forms the treatment of cervical cancer is not something which is difficult to go through. Even in Stage III, one can expect cure upto a range of 50-60%. So i would insist you, to speak to your aunt and tell the facts that the treatment is infact not very difficult to go through and sideeffects like Hairloss (probable reason why she might be refusing treatment) etc are not usually seen with this treatment
Hi, Thanks for writing to hcm. It is sad to hear that your aunt has been diagnosed with cervical cancer. The 5 year survival in cervical cancer depends on stage as follows: IA: 95–100% IB1: 85–90% IB2: 60–70% IIA: 75% IIB: 60–65% IIIA: 25–50% IIIB: 25–50% IVA: 15–30% IVB: However this survival data cannot be individualized for one particular patient. It tells us about the general survival pattern. But I would recommend you counsel your aunt regarding taking proper treatment. Nowadays with new treament modalitites the side effects are very few and she might be able to come out through this and get cured. Hope this is helpful. Regards, Dr. Aseem.
