Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How do you know when you are over pneumonia? Our daughter went into the hospital for a blood transfusion because her hemoglobin was so low (6.1) and they did an x-ray and found out she had pneumonia. She is immunocompromised and was treated with Vancomicin, Cefepime, Flagyl for two days inpatient and then sent home with five Levaquin 500 mg tablets.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Generally, treatment of pneumonia consists of a curse of 7 to 14 days of antibiotics. That is most of the time enough to cure the infection.
By this time the patient should be feeling very well and should not run the fever and should not be short of breath. However, some other features may remain for a much longer time. That is x-ray takes up to to 6 weeks to become clear.
Similarly, tiredness and minor cough may remain for a month or even more. These do not need treatment.
So of not otherwise indicated treatment of about 10 days is sufficient especially once the culture-sensitive report is available (which I assume done in the hospital in your case), but we need to see her as she is immunocompromised, and also his low HB must be a concern in the following visit.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
