How Long Does Symptoms Take To Show Up After Ingestion Of Allergen?

My 3 yr old is allergic to peanut. I suspect he orally ingested a small amount of peanut butter about 2 hrs ago. What should I do? He has no symptoms. But I am not sure if he will have any later. When he was about 6 months old he developed hives about 10 hours after accidentally tasting a very small amount of peanutbutter. How long could it take a reaction, if any, to occur after ingestion? Do you think he Should be taken to the ER.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

He many or may not have a reaction, but the time taken cannot be judged at this juncture. I would say it is best to go to the ER and keep him under observation as it can result in respiratory difficulties and so on. Taking a prophylactic anti-histamine shot may also help.

Best wishes
