Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
OK--in Dec. I had a one-car wreck (mine) which caused me to hang n to the rim of my moon roof for 25-30 min. until the EMS could free me. I had to do this because any sudden movement of my body would cause my seat belt to tighten, so tried to stay as still as possible --was in a hanging position with seat belt crossing my heart/lung on chest and crossing against my neck on the left. No injures except two chipped nails, but car totaled. Hosp, freed me after two hours. about 6-8 weeks later noticed both thumbs giving me trouble, the left at the base of the thumb sore and the right one at the first knuckle below the nail. Both joints when I flexed them gave a clicking feeling. The left one changed to the first knuckle below the nail. Went to Ortho MD just this week and he diagnosed trigger thumb. Injected rt. thumb only with procaine and cortisone. How long does it take to expect results??
You should try with nonsteroid painkillers such as ibuprofenum or Ketorlac first. Strapping your affected finger or thumb to a plastic splint can ease your symptoms by stopping your finger moving. If your finger is particularly stiff in the morning, it may help to use a splint overnight. Corticosteroids are thought to work by reducing swelling of the tendon, allowing the tendon to move freely again. This can sometimes happen within a few days of having the injection, but it usually takes a few weeks. Surgery is the last option and may be recommended if the above treatments don't work or are unsuitable.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
