How Long Does Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Take To Cure?

I received a decadron injection this morning at approximately 10:00a.m. for upper respiratory problem, stuffy nose, cough, congestion...actually a very bad cold. I have not been able to sleep since. How long will this last. Sneezing often, but has helped with stuffy nose.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Decadron (dexamethasone) is a steroid medication that is commonly used in severe respiratory infection to reduce inflammation and swelling in respiratory tract to help with congestion. At least 2 to 3 doses are required in severe infection along with antihistamines and antibiotic if needed to help with symptoms of cold.

Recovery time can vary depending on the severity of the infection, individual's immune system, age and overall health status. However uncomplicated respiratory tract infections resolve within 7-10 days. Steam inhalation and betadine mouth gargle can help in such infections.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks.
