Hi and welcome to HCM!

Thanks for posting your query here.

Proluton is a progesterone hormone derivative. This plays an important role in implantation and maintaining of the pregnancy. Upto 12 weeks of pregnancy the corpus luteum will produce progesterone and after 12 weeks the placenta starts producing. A deficiency in the hormone release will result in difficult implantation of the embryo. Hence to overcome this progesterone supportive therapy is used. Progesterone deficiency causes maximum chances of bleeding in the second half of the pregnancy like 3 to 6 months. The placental failure is the reason. It is commonly used in the second half of pregnancy to prevent any miscarriage.

As your pregnancy is precious and two miscarriage, the risk is more. Hence your gynae has put you on proluton depot even without any major symptoms.

Depending on the progress of the pregnancy it will be reduced. In general it is continued upto the continuation of the second trimester.

Stop worrying and enjoy the motherhood. Hope this is helpful to you.

Dear papridmc55,
You are right.
Your history doesn't say that you have a defect in progesterone production, and that progesterone intake will have a role in continuation of pregnancy.
On the other hand every pregnancy is a valuable one so, if progesterone has a role in preventing abortion and blighted ova, it should have been prescribed to all ladies.
You may discuss this with your doctor may be he has another reason.
Progesterone has a role in preventing preterm labor so I'd you doctor sees that you are at risk of preterm labor this may be a good strategy.
Finally I would like to clarify two points:
- Never change your treatment policy without nitrifying you're doctor.
- Progesterone intake all through pregnancy is safe, so don't worry if he insists on his opinion.
I wish you best luck and a wonderful baby soon.
Dr. Ahmed Bahaa.
