Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Long Should Nitrofurantoin Be Taken For The Treatment Of Bladder Infection?
I am taking nitroforantoin twice /day for bladder infection. This is the second time I ve taken it within ten days for the same infection. The first time it was for seven days and this time it will be for ten days. Should this med have worked to eradicate the infection during the first course of treatment?
Antibiotics like Nitrofurantoin are ideally taken for 7 days to treat infections of a urinary bladder infection. However, if the infection has not been subsided completely and you need to take it again, then it would be ideal to get the following investigations done before taking antibiotics. 1. Urine culture and sensitivity test 2. Ultrasound scan of the abdomen 3. Cystoscopy
This will give an idea which appropriate antibiotic needs to be taken to get rid of infection completely. Kindly consult urologist with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
