How Long Should Predmet Be Taken For Swelling And Pain In The Joints?
My mother aged 85 years has taken predmet 8 mg for 7days then 4 mg for one week for swalling redness and pain in joints due to arthritis. She got comple relif but when she stopped the predmet after a week again swalling pain and redness start. Is this medicine safe and for how long this medicine be continue ?
Predmet is a steroid but it is not a habit forming medication. The symptoms of arthritis is pain in the ankle, joints, neck, wrist, hands & fingers. It can be tapered & stopped as soon as the symptoms reduce & can be substituted with analgesics.
Follow up treatments are required & quarterly tests for CRP, anti-CCP, ESR are done to monitor the dose of the medications. She can also use heating pads, cold compress for relieve. Stretch & physical exercises should be done regularly. Massage & hydrotherapy are effective.
Medications like NSAIDS, steroids, immunosuppressives & analgesics are helpful. RA cannot be cured but the symptoms can be improved. Deformities can be improved by surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Nupur K,
