How Long Should Antibiotics Be Continued For Tonsillitis?
I have tonsillitis and have taken 2 1/2 day s worth of antibiotics. The pains in my body are easing but nothing else ( my tonsils are huge and covered in pus). Now each time I try to sleep I wake up suddenly feeling like I haven t been breathing or can t. This happens over and over then I fully wake up and sit up and feel fine. My nose isn t blocked or runny, is this normal or should I be getting checked out again?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Enlarged painful tonsils with accumulation of pus are suggestive of suppurative tonsillitis. Treatment of suppurative tonsillitis requires antibiotic treatment. You have taken antibiotics for two and half days but they need to be continued for at least 5-7 days for relief. In case the pus does not clear away, you need to consult your treating doctor for draining of pus.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
