How Long Will It Take To Balance The Testosterone Levels In A Teenager?
Hi, My 15 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with PCOS. Her symptoms are acne, some facial hair and minor thinning on the top of her head. Blood work revealed that her total testosterone was 84. Normal ranges are 14-76. All other hormone results were in the normal range. She has completely changed her diet eliminating processed foods and sugars. My questions are: When the testosterone levels balance out will the hair loss stop and will that area regrow hair after the hormones are balanced? Thank you, Lisa
Hi, Thank you for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. One of the features associated with PCOS is high androgen (testosterone) levels, which is known to cause hair loss, acne and male-pattern hair growth on face and body (hirsutism). Hormone therapy will help with male-type hair growth and acne. Birth control pills, patches or vaginal rings are prescribed for hormone therapy. Androgen-lowering drug spironolactone is often used with combined hormonal birth control. Hence, kindly consult Gynecologist for appropriate management by administration of proper dosage and duration of the above mentioned drugs. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
