How Long Will Shunt Placement For Hydrocephalus Be Effective?

Hi, my son has non communicating hydrocephalus. He was diagnosed at age 14 but the doctor said he was born with it. Said it was aquaductal stenosis. He had a hole created in his 3rd ventrical which closed due to scar tissue. The next step will be shunt placement. How long can this go un-shunted safely?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi... if it is a non communicating hydrocephalus then the child will need Shunt at the earliest as there is no other pathway for the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. If the third ventriculostomy has got blocked then shunt should be done at the earliest or else it will lead to symptoms due to increased pressure.
