How Long Would Enlarged Liver And Fatty Liver Take To Be Brought Back To Normal Conditions Through Lifestyle Changes?

Hi, my liver enlarged due to a period of heavy drinking (I have PTSD) and use of paracentamol. a scan about a year ago showed fatty liver but no cirrhosis... I believe the liver has continued to increase in size. Can it return to normal or near normal size with a healthy diet, eliminating alcohol etc, and if so how long would this take?

Hi,

Definitely, your liver can heal and regenerate. Liver tissue can grow back after it experiences damage or even the doctor removes a part of it. Actually, people can manage many types of liver diseases and even reverse them. New liver cells grow and multiply in the injured or removed area. Old damaged cells also can repair themselves. However, liver disease can affect the ability to heal. Diseases of liver can slow down and even stop healing.

The liver healing can be definitely accelerated by a healthy life style, particularly avoiding alcohol, restricting fat intake, avoiding substance abuse including any unnecessary medicines and even health supplements. Usually healing of liver can begin within a few days after avoiding alcohol. Depending on the damage, complete healing can take few weeks or months.

However, not all the damage may be reversible. If liver damage is extensive and long term, then it may not be possible, to reverse all of the damage done. However, fortunately, liver has the capacity to regenerate and repair itself from the injuries or disorders. This healing ability can be utilized with the help of healthy lifestyle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
