How Safe And Effective Is Taking Sizodon For Depression?

I have been prescribed sizodon md 0.5 (risperidone) in order to treat a longstanding problem of depression and anxiety. I have tried many medicines under psychiatrists supervision these include - Nexito, Quetiapine, tryptomer and finally sizodon. Sizodon has given me the most relief from my problems and the least sideeffects (as compared to quetiapine)
Over a period of 10 - 15 days the side effects have now increased. though my negative thoughts and lack of emotional control has now reduced, I feel extremely tired (mentally and not physically) and feel "artificial" as if my mental state though better than before is an illusion and not a real sustained improved state. I am also strangely short tempered - not my usual behaviour.

It has been more than an year since the onset of depression. I want to know how long would i have to take sizodon, when will the side effects abate, what will be permanent / irreversible side effects of this medicine.

Secondly more on depression - is this really treatable or would i be dependent on sizodon / other meds for the rest of my life.

Thirdly - due to excessive weight i suffer from upper airway restriction syndrome (akin to sleep apneoa) and use a CPAP machine in order to sleep. trying to cure this illness by reducing weight. have been very unsuccessful at losing weight. Does this have a bearing on my depression illness

Please help.

Hello
Welcome to HCM

Risperidone is a second generation anti-psychotic drug. It is commonly used in psychotic disorders and some times in mood disorders as mood stabiliser. You have been prescribed the drug to decrease intractable anxiety which was not responding to medicines. Low doses are known to improve mood and anxiety.

Now coming to your questions-

- You are feeling tired, feeling that you are not real and mood is not stable. These symptoms might be occurring due to negative symptoms of depression itself. Risperidone is known to aggravate some symptoms of depression. You can consult your psychiatrist for reevaluation. Many medicines like Amisulpiride can be used in negative symptoms. These help to improve mood state and also help in depressive symptoms like apathy.

- Side effects like sedation, weight gain, increased appetite, sexual side effects, apathy, movements side effects etc are commonly seen but fortunately these are reversible. Low doses like 0.5 mg are intact safe and don't cause much side effects.

- Depression is treatable by proper medicines. You will have to follow your psychiatrists advise. With time as soon as you achieve remission you will improve.

- Yes obesity is one of aggravating factor for depressive symptoms. Sleep apnea causes disturbed sleep and day time drowsiness. With time chronic fatigue, tiredness etc symptoms are seen. These symptoms result in depression.

Hope I have solved your questions. Thanks
