Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 62, post menopausal and have been on Synthroid( high dose) since 1980. When I was 53 my new doctor said I needed to lower my dose and put me on 112mcg of Levothyroxin. I gained weight and no matter how much I eat the right portions of the right foods I cannot lose. I have all of the symptoms of low thyroid but my doctor continues to say that my levels are normal with the current dosage. I have osteoporosis and find it more and more difficult to exercise. I am wondering if Actalin could help? I read below that you feel it should be avoided at my age. Can you tell me why?
Actalin is not advisable while on Levothyroxine. Hypothyroidism can be safely and effectively treated with the thyroid hormone replacement in the form of levothyroxine. As long as you take levothyroxine it is not safe to take iodine supplements like Actalin because the response to Actalin is unpredictable and can not be monitored on routine thyroid function tests.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
