How Safe Is Taking Nebulizer And Steroid Inhaler For Chronic Asthma?

I am 21 years old. I have recently been put on a nebulizer 3 times a day and a rescue inhaler and also a steroid inhaler. My throat is feeling very tight and I'm a getting very light headed. The dr said I have uncontroled cronic asthma like 3 months ago. I have gotten so bad sometimes that I have actually passed out. I am not feeling good at all right now and my husband is at work. Help?

Allergist and Immunologist 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. If you are not feeling well at present, I would suggest you to use nebulizer and inhaler as instructed by your doctor. For example, rescue inhalers (those to be taken at time of emergency like levoalbutamol or salbutamol etc).

If rescue inhalers/nebulizers do not improve your symptoms, I would suggest you to contact your doctor and get examined by him/her.

2. As you have chronic uncotrolled asthma, regular use of steroid inhalers is very important for you. Please do not discontinue/decrease the dose without instructions by your doctor.

3. I usually prescribe my such patients montelukast in addition to inhalers.

4. I would suggest you allergy testing for common air-borne allergens such as house dust mites, molds, pollens, insect proteins, animal dander, etc. This will help you identify the substances causing allergies to you as well as to know the measures to avoid them.

5. Based on allergy testing, an Allergist-Immunologist may prescribe you allergen specific immunotherapy which works on immune system to gradually improve allergy symptoms and hence gradually reduce medicine requirements.

6. In general, I would suggest you to avoid exposure to dusts, smokes and air pollution as much as possible.

7. Regular breathing exercises and nutrition rich in minerals & vitamins will also help you in a long run by improving your lung capacity and immunity respectively.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
