Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern about your daughter. It is good that your daughter's consciousness is normal. As she is sleeping now, you can check her consciousness by waking her up intermittenly. You can ask simple questions like showing her some food item and ask its name, ask her full name, your name, you can ask her about her likes and dislikes. Thats how you can evaluate her consciousness and orientation.

You must closely observe alarming signs of head injury like vomiting, fits, loss of consciousness, decreasing consciousness, onset of new focal deficit, excessive crying, excessive sleepiness. In case of presence of any of above symptoms, you should consult ER. Mean while, you can keep her awake, keep her head at higher level than chest, in case of vomiting turn her head to one side.

Do not worry about bruise. It will resolve in 10-14 days. If consciousness remains intact and no alarming signs, then you can relax.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.

Neurologist, Surgical Dr. Ishu Bishnoi's  Response
Hello. Thanks for asking form HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your daughter is conscious and active. The mode of head injury was not dangerous which is also good.

But to rule out any doubt of dangerous head injury, you should observe her for

: vomiting
: loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes. If she is sleeping, wake her up and observe whether she is waking up easily/ after waking up, she is responding or not/ whether she is waking up only when you disturb her or she remains awake normally. If any of above finding's answer is no, then it may be dangerous head injury
: bleed through nose/ear/throat
: persistent headache or head banging even after giving her painkiller
: fits
: onset of new focal deficit

If you find any of above sign, consult doctor as soon as possible. She may be advised CT head to rule out fracture or brain bleed. Fracture is usually managed conservatively, while bleed may require surgery if there is pressure on brain.

If no above sign, then she can be observed at home. You can follow few tips to give her relief

: Apply icepacks at injury site
: Give her painkiller syrup like Diclofenac/Ibuprofen after proper prescription
: Avoid pressure at injury site
: Keep her head at higher level than chest
: Wait for 190-14 days, bruise and swelling will subside on its own.

Hope it will help her. Still no relief, you can consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.
