How Serious Could Spike In Blood Pressure On Stopping Medications Be?

My father is 75 years old and diabetic. His blood pressure this morning was 180/100 and has since come down to 172/90. When I spoke to him, he told me that he had stopped taking his medication for a couple of days and just took it again this morning when he saw how high his pressure was. Should I take him to the doctor or hospital or wait to see if it comes down further after his meds kick in?

Hi,
Medications particularly necessary for daily control like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, neurological diseases etc should not be stopped without doctor advise or change of medication.
Any abrupt stoppage is going to put the necessary system into uncontrolled problems like now. Blood pressure is too high. If it is coming under control, need not worry. 180/100 was serious and could have led to serious stroke or myocardial infarction.
The elderly need to be always checked for regular medication. Try to keep the tablets for every week separately and do keep checking it. A spike in blood pressure or blood sugar should not be a reason for reevaluation.
As the blood pressure is reducing, you can wait and watch. But any head ache, dizziness or chest pain needs to be evaluated immediately by the physician.
Take care.
