Thanks for contacting with your health concern
1. Althea [
cyproterone acetate + ethinyl estradiol] pill is used for
contraception, for control of acne and hirsutism and since you have a problem with your menstruation period I would not recommend its use initially but get a checkup with a Gynecologist to first exclude common causes of
irregular menstruation.
2. As I cannot deduce your age [not mentioned] so cannot comment on the exact treatment since management varies according to the age [from lifestyle changes to hormonal therapy]:
- If it is puberty to 20 years: it could be due to anovular cycles for which general improvement of health with tonics, hematinics, and exercise is usually enough and if there is no relief with general measures then pills are advised
- if it is 20-40 years age [child bearing age]; then
. P.V. examination and
ultrasound to rule out abnormalities of the uterus. [polyps, endometrial atrophy, endometrial hyperplasia]
- Hb%, WBC,
bleeding disorder profile, serum thyroid profile.
-
oral contraceptive pills, and if there is no relief, then biopsy followed by
hormone therapy.
- Peri menopausal age: first send the patient for endometrial curettage and biopsy to rule out malignancy and if biopsy is normal, advise hormone therapy for 3-4 cycles
PS. Althea pill is a pack of 21 tablets which means take 1 pill daily beginning on the first day of menstrual period and continue taking one daily till 21 days [i.e. interval of 24 hours is necessary, and thus do not take it 3 times a day], and after taking the last pill do not take any pill for next 7 days which will complete your menstrual cycle and start the new pack after 7 pill-free days BUT as your periods are irregular thus it is best to ask your healthcare provider for ways to become compliant
