How Should Generalized Anxiety Disorder Be Treated?
Sir I'm a man of 35 years of age and have been said to be suffering from GAD since yr 2003. I underwent treatment at AIIMS psychiatry OPD for three years regularly. I discontinued the treatment at my own will when I felt that I was normal. But after a couple of months I found that the same ghost has returned to haunt me with new and more problems. So in 2006 I had the treatment started at RML Hospital, Delhi. But despite of the regular treatment the problem subsides at one time and aggravate at another. Plz tell me what i must do....
Generalised anxiety disorder is a common type of anxiety disorder in which anxiety due to non specific things are seen. The disorder runs a chronic course. It shows remissions and relapses. Both medicines and behaviour therapy are useful in treatment. You have take treatment two times and currently the problem is persisting. Medicines like SSRIs as Sertraline, fluoxetine, Escitalopram are approved for use in GAD. In most of individuals reason of poor response is poor compliance to therapy. I would request you to take treatment as per prescription and don't stop taking medicines without advise of doctor. Attend behaviour therapy sessions. Relaxation exercises like progressive muscle relaxation exercise, yoga, meditation, breathing exercises are very useful. These modalities of treatment supplement medicines and result in early improvement. Consult your psychiatrist for proper evaluation.
Thanks, hope this helps you
