How Should Staphylococcus Epidermidis With Cloudy Urine Be Treated?

I am a 72 yr old male in excellent health. My urine has been cultured for staphylococcus epidermis greater than 100,000 CFU/mL. My internist does not see the need to treat it (presumably with an antibiotic). Other than cloudy urine for several months, I am asymptomatic except for high WBC. Do you have an opinion? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Staphylococcus is one of the most common causes of urinary tract infection.

In my opinion, it should be treated.

The antibiotic of choice is nitrofurantoin (Macrobid).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
