How Successful Is A Rhizotomy After A Spinal Fusion?
I had a spinal fusion several years ago from s1 to l 4-5. My doctor did a riziotomy at l 4-5 and it helped for the ridiculopothy in my right leg. Another dr is telling me that there is no evidence that this procedure works. Has this procedure ever been done after a spinal fusion?
Actually rhizotomy is done to relieve pain caused by impingement of nerves. Rhizotomy provides pain relief immediately and it can last several years too. when rhizotomy fails to provide pain relief or if the pain recurs, then surgical procedures like decompression surgery or spinal fusion are indicated. However, rhizotomy may not be necessary after a spinal fusion procedure.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
