How To Avoid Osteoporosis?

My husband, Michael is 50yrs old,187lbs, 6' 2", caucasian male and is in good general health. He had surgery to remove his parathyroid glands 2 yrs ago in Tampa,Florida before we moved overseas here to Cyprus. He takes a Centrum Silver multi-vitamin and a Citracal Calcium Citrate+D3 twice a day. We eat wholegrains, eggwhites, legumes no real meat mostly fish. He does not drink or smoke. He does consume black coffee daily. He runs 5x a week 6-7miles each time, does calisthenics and lifts weights daily. He wears glasses for reading now. We are concerned about his bone density levels. He has just had a very bad month at the dentist. Can TMJ occur when your parathyroid glands are removed? What can we do to be sure he does not develop bone disease or osteoporosis? We read about the blood/urine lab tests and the DXA and VFA tests. Is there anything else we should know? Will doctors here in Cyprus know how to treat this? Which doctor should we see at this point, an endocrinologist or an Osteo doctor? Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. TMJ is not known to be related to parathyroid glands.
2. However, improve his calcium and Vit D intake to reduce risk of osteoporosis.
3. You can wait for a few more years (>55 years) before you get a bone mineral density tests done, as he is very active.
4. If you want to meet, an endocrinologist would be able to advise you at present. If you have any possible fracture in future, you can meet an orthopedic surgeon.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
