Hello, Thankyou for your question Since AFP (alphafetoprotein) can be raised in many condition ,for example neural tube malformation, trisomies ,down syndrome and congenital malformation of abdominal wall.As wether it is because of trisomy or other genetic defect ,can be concluded after midtrimester anomaly scan and chromosomal studies.Unfortunately there is no cure for genetic chromosomal abnormalities and it happens only can say because of bad luck during fertilization of ova and sperms. But many studies have shown that having folic acid 5 mg per day preconception can lower the incidence from neural tube defects and other congenital chromosomal abnormalities. Wish you best of luck.
