Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Am I sick enough to get medical help? I'm 20, female, and have had eating problems since I was a child. I've never been formally diagnosed with an eating disorder. I have binged and purged before, however I mostly restrict. I'm only 5 feet and I weigh anywhere between 82-85lbs, depending on the day. I don't know how to go about getting help...
From the description of your problems, it is very likely that you are suffering from an eating disorder, probably Bulimia nervosa.
It is not necessary that you should be sick enough to seek help. Rather, seeking help as early as possible will prevent you from developing serious problems and complications in the future. Also, the earlier professional help is sought, the better and quicker will be the recovery.
There ate effective treatment options available to handle eating disorders. A psychiatrist would be the best person to seek help from. So, the best way to go about it is to tell your parents or guardian or school counsellor to get you a consultation with a Psychiatrist.
Best wishes.
