Stroke is mainly of two types: Thrombotic stroke and Hemorrhagic stroke. Usually stroke due to thrombosis has good prognosis compared to stroke due to hemorrhage. There are medicines to treat thrombotic stroke but there are no effective medicines for hemorrhagic stroke; even medicines will not do magic cure. Hence it may be difficult to predict the course of the disease. In your friend's father's case good outcome is unlikely as he is unconscious for more than a week.
