How To Deal With Blocked Stent Inserted In Billiary Duct?

patient is 45 yrs of age, had a problem of obstructive jaundice in october 2009, doctor inserted a plastic stent which was then replaced by metal stent. after this treatment now (june 2010), again the problem of jaundice is appearing with abdominal pain & fever. On consulting the doctor, the doctor says, the stent is blocked? What exactly the problem is and what is the best treatment option? Also tell that if the stent is inserted in the common billiary duct, why not to remove the gall bladder?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to hcm.
Well, it would be good if you told me about other findings and exact cause of biliary obstruction. In cases of biliary stones usually there is no progressive obstructions and stents should not be obstructed.
Unfortunately, in this case it is more likely to be malignant obstruction aas I can conclude and here, only surgical therapy may be succesful since any new stent will be obstructed again by tumor growth.

I suggest to consult hepatobilliary surgeon and do surgery called hepatiko-jejunal anastomosis with cholecytectomy. otherwise, jaundice may progress and cause serious issues in future.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
