How To Diagnose Symptoms Of Absence Seizures In A Child?

my friends son has started having EXTREME absence type seizures (or something) where he doesn t move for a very long time. For instance he ll take 5 hours in the bathroom just taking a shower. He ll be doing his homework and just stop and be completely still with his pencil in the air - then after some time begin moving again. He ll go to put a bite of food in his mouth and stop just short of his mouth and sit there - very scary -

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If absence seizures are suspected then he needs to be assessed and treated.

The assessment would include history, physical examination and an EEG.

EEG would like at his brain waves and determine if there is seizure activity.

If seizures are confirmed, then he would need medications to reduce the frequency of the episodes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
