How To Get Rid Of Congestion And Mucus In Cough Of An Infant?

My daughter has a baby boy who was born 5 months ago who has since then been coughing with mucus and congestion and he has been coughing uncontrollably with mucus following the cough. he is very very agitated and also congested. please help me cause I feel it s something very serious.
