How To Handle Withdrawal Symptoms Of Antidepressants?
Hi Doctor,I was suffering from insomnia and anxiety/depression. I have been prescribed tegretol cr 200, prothiaden 25 mg and nexito plus 1 tablet each at night daily. i had been taking this for the past 5 years and would like to stop the medicines as i am currently practising yoga and meditations along with vigorous cardio vascular workouts. Please help me as how to taper the dosage. I am facing sleeping problems and withdrawal symptoms if i stop the medicines.
I have read your problem and understand your problem. Tagretol CR is carbamazepine, prothiadin is dosulepin and nexito is escitalopram. You are taking these drugs since last 5 years and abrupt stoppage of this drug may result in withdrawal syndrome. So gradual tapering of these drugs is advised to prevent withdrawal syndrome. I usually ask my patients to decrease the doses of drugs, about 20-25% every two weeks and then to stop completely the drugs at about 8-10 weeks. In this way severe withdrawal is avoided. Consult your psychiatrist for proper evaluation and for tapering of drugs.
Thanks, hope this helps you
