How To Heal Fall Injury Mediated Painful Small Lump Just Below The Ankle Bone?

I fell and caught my ankle bone over two weeks ago, it was bruised badly for several days and I was unable to put weight on it. Now most the bruising has gone down apart from a small lump just below the bone, which really hurts when pressure is applied. Should I get an xray?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Yes, it is mandatory to get an xray done for the injured part to rule out any bony injury.

Most propably, you might have suffered a Hematoma (blood clot) at the site of injury resulting in a painful bump. These hematoma's usually resolve spontaneously within 2-3 weeks without any issues.

- Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day.
- Use an elastic compression bandage around the injured area to limit any swelling.
- Keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
- Use simple analgesics like aleve or advil as needed.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for a detailed evaluation and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
