Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have low ferritin levels - it is at 10 in a test that is normal between 25-290. It was 12 in July and I began a very high protein diet and taking ferrous daily in a fairly high dose. It is going down instead of up? What should we look for to find the cause and what is my best treatment option?
Serum ferritin levels low means you have enough iron. High Ferritin levels are abnormal. Low ferritin levels are normal and shows you have adequate iron in your body. What you should do is STOP TAKING FERROUS. If you have an iron overload even your liver can fail leading to fatal liver failure. So please stop taking Iron supplementation as soon as possible. Your ferritin levels will rise automatically after 4 weeks. Please stop treating yourself. It can be very dangerous. Hope you get this advice on time and take it seriously. Take care.
