How To Improve Fertility In Men Inspite Of Taking Citalopram?
Hello my husband is taking 2x 20mg citalopram daily we are trying to get pregnant he had a sperm test and it shows he has 3% good sperm all the other have a shorter tail from what we understand is this because of the medication he is taking? And is there any thing he can do to make the tail part of his sperm grow longer?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Citalopram is a SSRI drug and your husband is taking high doses of this drug. The drug at high doses is known to cause sexual side effects as reduced libido, delayed ejaculation, anorgasmia etc. In some case reports Citalopram and other SSRIs have been found to cause reduction is sperm counts and reduction in sperm motility. These side effects are rare but result in significant distress. If fertility is main issue as you are trying to conceive then I would advise you to visit his doctor again and consult to change the drug with some relatively safer drug. Drugs like Mirtazapine, Bupropion etc can be used. These drugs are relatively safe and free of serious side effects like loss of fertility.
Hope this helps you. Thanks and Take care
