Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mother is 92 she is pretty strong nothing major wrong and has healed from a hole in her back and broken hip healed -recently she was taken off of respiradol and citalopram and adavan because she wasn t getting enough liquids in nursing home and severely dehydrated-she says her mouth is sore 2 teeth are broken off all she has- and she doesn t act like she s in severe pain-however she want eat-but she will drink-she will say the food is nasty. please how can I get her appetite to increase?
There are medications which can be used to increase appetite. The most commonly prescribed appetite stimulants are Marinol and Megace. I would ask your mothers physician if either of these would be appropriate. As she is 92, I would allow her to eat any foods she likes in an effort to increase her food intake.
