Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How can I tell if by bladder has been overextended or my prostate is enlarge. I am having difficulty urinating. Just had a catheter remove today and I am going to do the catheter my self for 3 days. I just left the doctor and I have BPH. last week I retain 1 quart of urine. So now I do not know if it is my kidney or overextended bladder?
Please note that the symptoms of over extended bladder would be an urge to pass urine, inability to pass it, abdominal discomfort and certain amount of pain in severe cases. Kidneys do not hold urine and its only when the bladder or urethra (tube which drains the bladder) is blocked, the back pressure causes accumulation of urine in ureter( tube which drains the kidneys).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
