How To Lower The Sugar Levels Consistently?

Good afternoon doc,my name is mohamad.I have been a diabetic patient since 10 years ago.I m taking pills everyday and I m still very active in sport eventhough my age currently at 59.I ve my own sugar level test intrument and I do check my blood sugar regularly. The reading from the test very fluctuate between 160mg/dl to 200mg/dl.My question is that how am I going to bring down the sugar level consistently say below 180mg/dl and is there any supplement or vitamin which can be consumed to help reducing too much depending on pills..your advice highly appreciated.

Dear Sir, it's good that you are trying your best to take care of your health. Diabetes is a problem that arise from insulin deficiency or resistance. You have not mentioned the name of the pills you are taking. First, you should have a salt restricted diabetic diet with limited calories and fat. Complex carbohydrates and high fibre diets are good. You should continue exercise and related work ups. Secondly, you should have HBA1c done alongwith fasting and post prandial (2 hr) plasma glucose. You need to check your BP, serum TSH level, and a lipid profile in fasting state. Third, depending upon HBA1c and other tests I mentioned you need to be put on one or more medicine ( e.g. metformin alongwith OHAs or insulin); don't be afraid if you are prescribed insulin. For, uncontrolled diabetes a proper basal or premixed regimen of insulin can do miracle.Alongwith these, you can have vitamine supplements too (especially those containing antioxidants). For further management, you can consult your local diabetologist or endocrinologist or HCM with the investigation reports mentioned. Regards. Dr. Kaushik
