Hi Dr, past 6 m I am under lithium tablet dose from past 6 months.before taking tablet my tsh was normal. but few weeks back my TSH has jumped to 69.5. would like to know due to lithium ,TSH has increased? does it also come from hereditary. also please suggest how to overcome TSH problem.
Lithium tablets may be a cause of hypothyroidism. But in these cases, an autoimmune cause should be excluded. You have to check Anti TPO and antithyroglobuline antibodies and if they are negative, Lithium is considered to be the cause of hypothyroidism.
Stopping the treatment would be the ideal solution in the second case. If it is very important to take it, than levothyroxine treatment should be started.
Hope it will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
