How To Overcome Breastfeeding Difficulties To Newborn?
Dear Dr, My 5 week baby is not breastfeeding directly. Till now he is feeding using nipple shield only. It takes longer for feeding. And it s paining for me while using shield. Now a days He is feeding for 5 mins n sleeping 5 mins. This is continuously happening for 3 to 4 hrs. Because of tis reason We are giving milk powder in between to calm his crying. I have enough milk to feed. Problem is he is not learning to feed directly from breast. Pls help.
The nipple shield is generally used for only a short period of time so , if possible, it would be best to reduce its use til you are no longer using it at all.
In terms of the sleeping while feeding, when you notice that he is drifting off, he should be gently woken up and stimulated so that he continues feeding. This should be done till he feeds for 20 to 30 minutes consistently.
He can be stimulated by touching the side of his mouth, his feet , changing his position. He should not nap while feeding. It can be difficult sometimes so you may want to speak to your doctor or a lactation expert.
I hope this helps
