Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 53 yrs, on chemo maintenance via port. Take Zolpidem to sleep and recently Lorazepam to help get through the day. I m having severe constipation, almost to the point of going to ER. Drink plenty of water and watch what I eat. Hate going back and forth to MD for this ---- what can I do?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of being under chemotherapy via port, taking Zolpidem and Lorazepam, having constipation almost to the point of going to ER, hate goind back to MD for this. I can understand the situation you must be going through. Please follow the usual course of actions when there is constipation: First of all try oral laxatives. Get an X-ray of the abdomen to see for the fecal loading, if too much, an enema can be tried, if this fails ask for saline and soap enema for complete evacuation. Laxatives to continue. Watch for the foods and beverages that cause you constipation and stop them. Have normal full diet. Reduce the stress and anxiety. Plenty of oral fluids. Watch for the foods and beverages that help you with soft normal stools and take these daily.
