General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
The HSG (hysterosalpingogram) test is procedure used to investigate the fallopian tubes and uterus to identify any blockages or abnormalities that may affect fertility. It is performed by using special dyes between 6 to 10 days after start of menstrual period. Mild pain and discomfort are common along with abdominal cramps and sometimes spotting are seen during this technique.
Talk to your doctor before the test and ask for advice to reduce pain. They might advise pain medication (painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) before the start of the test. Also, one can use a heating pad over the lower abdomen before and after the procedure can help reduce pain and discomfort.
If the discomfort still persists, do not hesitate to talk to your treating doctor for additional medical support.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks.
